UT-policeman Laurens Goossen
'You can solve things with a talk
Laurens Goossen is the policeman for the UT and part of the police-region Enschede-North. Here, he tells us about his work and, in doing so, he talks about the university as well.
What does your work for the UT consist of?
'The main thing we do at the university is guiding people during events. For instance, the other day there was a party. I have to be there, if the party is quiet I can go home around midnight but if it is not I have to stay the whole night. Also, during the triathlon for example, we help the organisation take care of the people.'
How do students behave at the UT?
'They behave very well in general, when they don't we have a talk and that's enough. In the case that they break something, they pay for it and that's ok. There are no problems.'
What was the last big thing that happened at the UT?
'Well, two months ago something really amusing happened. A group of thieves stole some video projectors from two of the Faculties and we found them via Internet... They were advertising the projectors to sell them and, in that way we reached them. It was not very smart of the thieves to do so, was it?'
But, what Laurens Goossen certainly likes most is being in contact with young people and collaborating with them in all kinds of social events. 'I like everything about my job. One event at the university I enjoy is the introduction week. We guide the students, stop traffic, etc. Another part of my job that I really like is the trip to Latvia we do in June to see what people there need. Then, we come back to try to collect those things to be sent to Latvia. It makes us feel that our work is useful'.
