This year’s theme is Plunder & Party, in other words, a pirate party. ‘Each of the three flats will have its own décor’, says Joeri Heikamp, chair of the ’t Pleintje Flat Party and Embedded Systems student. ‘One living room will be transformed into a tropical island, another into an underwater world, and the third into a shipwreck.’ Each space will also have its own music genre: student bands, techno, and DJs and party music. A large marquee will be set up on the square in front of the flats to create additional space.
The living rooms are currently still full of furniture and clutter, but everything will be completely cleared out and stored in containers. ‘It is quite a job. And then there is the work of putting everything back afterwards’, says Heikamp.
New name and logo
’t Pleintje is the organisation’s official name this year, and it now has a logo as well. The organisation hopes this will give it a more recognisable identity and increase its profile. ‘And it should prevent confusion with other flat parties.’
The size of the event means there is a lot for Heikamp and his fellow residents to organise. ‘Think of applying for permits, arranging first-aiders, and hiring security guards. And that is not even mentioning the safety plan and emergency exits’, says the chair. All 42 residents, or fourteen residents per flat, are helping out.
The first 150 tickets have already been sold. General ticket sales start on Monday. A ticket costs €17.50. ‘That includes beer and wine. We want to break even. If we make a profit, we will put the money into a fund so that we have some starting capital for next year.’ The chair has high expectations. ‘So far, our flat party has always sold out.’
