Two UT researchers receive Idea Generator grant

UT researchers Vanessa Magnanimo and Marco Gerards both receive a so-called Idea Generator grant from Dutch research financer NWO. With the grant, worth €50.000, they can further develop their out-of-the-box research ideas.

The project of Magnanimo, an associate professor at the ET Department of Construction Management & Engineering, is called GREENSED. It’s aimed at developing cutting-edge treatments for sediments, using byproducts from the local economy. Wastes will be converted into bysed-ment, an innovative building material. In close collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Bari, Magnanimo wants to realise a proof of concept in the Gulf of Taranto, an extremely polluted area in the Mediterranean.

Gerards, who is an assistant professor at the Computer Architecture for Embedded Systems group (faculty EEMCS), focuses on quantum algorithms in his project. He aims to develop a methodology that makes it easier to understand quantum algorithms. Based on this methodology, he wants to design a proof-of-concept quantum programming language that provides insights into the working of these algorithms.

The Idea Generator programme is funded from the Dutch Research Agenda (also known as the Nationale Wetenschapsagenda or NWA in short). The grant is meant for small, innovative and out-of-the-box projects, with a strong social impact. In total, forty researchers received the grant this round.
