#MeTooUT open discussion

An open discussion on the topic #MeTooUT will take place next Wednesday, the 8th of November. The event, organized by the Ambassador's Network and the Female Faculty Network of the UT (FFNT), is open to everyone from the University of Twente.

The discussion is a reaction to the recent viral use of hashtag ‘#MeToo’, used on social media to denounce sexual assault and harassment. In the past weeks, many women (and men) have posted #MeToo messages to share their experiences with unwanted sexual attention and intimidation.

One of them was UT professor Vanessa Evers, whose story aimed to show that power abuse and sexual harassment also exist in academia. The Executive Board of the University of Twente has expressed their support for Evers, and made it clear that no form of transgressive behavior is tolerated at the UT.

In light of these developments, the Ambassador's Network and the FFNT have therefore decided to organize this open discussion focused on UT policies and procedures related to sexual harassment, and on how these policies could be improved in the future. The discussion will be led by Peter-Paul Verbeek and include a panel involving Thom Palstra (Rector Magnificus), Joost Sluijs (HR), Vanessa Evers (EEMCS) and Melanie Braamhaar (UT Confidential Advisor). The whole event will be in English.

As the event hopes to include the entire UT community, everyone is welcome to join the discussion, which will be held on the 8th of November at 16:00-17:30 in the Waaier Building, room 3. You can find more information here.

Na deze ervaring besloot hij een oproep te doen aan zijn mede-mannen, om het gesprek aan te gaan en te strijden voor gelijke rechten. 'Nee, je hoeft je niet te schamen om een man te zijn, maar laten we onszelf nou een keer echt in de spiegel aankijken. Kijk en luister, niet per se naar mij, maar naar de vrouwen', schrijft hij in dit opiniestuk.

Grensoverschrijdend gedrag vindt op verschillende en uiteenlopende manieren plaats, ook op de campus. In een tweeluik vertellen twee studenten en twee medewerkers van de UT wat hen overkwam. Dit doen ze onder een gefingeerde naam, omdat de verhalen heftig en zeer persoonlijk zijn. Vandaag deel één: de studentes Juliëtte en Ann hadden seks tegen hun wil.

There are many different ways in which transgressive behaviour takes place, including on campus. This article is part of a diptych in which two UT students and two UT employees share what happened to them. Fictitious names are used as their stories are intense and very personal. Today we present part one: students Juliëtte and Ann had sex against their will.

The Inspectorate of Education estimates that around 33,000 students have encountered inappropriate behaviour during their studies. That equates to one in every 25 students. A formal complaint is rarely made.
