Twente and Rotterdam are the only universities that can expect more students in the coming academic year. According to the latest pre-enrolment numbers the UT grows by five percent. The other universities are doing worse than before, with percentages varying from minus three (Nijmegen) to minus twenty-seven (Wageningen).
The UT thanks its relatively advantageous position almost completely to the inflow of new programmes: business studies, industrial design and psychology. Without these new studies, starting in September, the UT would not win three percent but loose about fifteen. The programme biomedical technology, going into its second year, is also contributing heavily to keeping the student inflow on a higher level.
Falls in the pre-enrolments (reference date 5 April) can be seen in Telematics (over half less), Chemical Technology (minus 9 percent) and Educational Science and Technology (minus 33 percent). Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics are heading towards a considerable gain of over fifty percent.
At this moment the universities have 2,300 pre-enrolments less than last year around this time, a decrease of eleven percent. Higher vocational education (hbo) looses even more with minus seventeen percent.
The pre-enrolment numbers show a varying image every week, but the trend that the UT can expect a slight growth contrary to almost all other higher education institutes seems pretty stable.
