doc at the Faculty of EEMCS, at the Telecommunication group. He is working on a project for Philips, the software that he develops will be used on site. Yilong explains: 'It is supposed to solve a practical problem. I find this very interesting, because it only takes days to receive feedback on what you produced. Other engineers will make use of the source code of your programme and tell you what they think of it and what more they expect. That is a challenge, but it also keeps things fresh and makes what you are doing interesting.' He is happy about how much he is learning, one of his major purposes in coming here.

Two years ago Yilong Shen came to the Netherlands to work as a post-

When asked about comparison between two countries, he adds: 'Except for a few big cities here, other cities seem to me like small towns in China. It is good to have a feeling of living in a small town, but sometimes I also miss the 'crowded' city life in China.' Nowadays Yilong is busy with studying Dutch and he wonders how good his Dutch will be one year later. ôI think it is a good experience to study a foreign language where they actually speak it.'

Several months ago his wife came to the Netherlands. She is a highly-educated woman, with a master's degree from the College of Chinese Language and Culture. In order to live with her husband, Ju Yang had to quit her job as a teacher. She taught Chinese to foreign students and still keeps in touch with them.

Her future plan is to continue her teaching career. She states: 'It seems to me that there are a lot of people who are interested in the Chinese language and culture. On the other hand, China is becoming more and more open to the outside world. The more you know about China and the Chinese language, the more you will become enchanted by its history and future. It's my wish to devote my energy and effort to communicate this.'

Ju Yang would like to have a job here in order to take advantage of her knowledge and experience. She is convinced that people who have some connections with China would like to have some knowledge of that language and culture. She adds: 'I like the classroom environment but it is also fine to teach at home'.
