The announcement of the new building names was made yesterday during a festive meeting celebrating the start of the renovation of Mechanical Engineering Halls II and III. The winners of the building names competition held in the past months were presented with a 25-person cream pie. The new names will become official on 1 January 2004, December is a transitional month when both the old and the new names can be used.
The new building names had to reflect the character of the campus, be in Dutch, refer to the history of the estate Drienerlo, or refer to form or function. With a maximum of 3 syllables and 10 letters each building name had to be easy to use and sound natural in a discussion like: 'Are you leaving? Yes, I have to go to the Citadel. I left my coat there.'
The BB-building will be called Spiegel (mirror), as it is the building with a complete glass facade. Cubicus will be the new name of the remaining sections of the TWRC-building, because that is what it looks like. Langezijds is our longest building, now called the CT-building. The colourful guest accommodation behind the day care center Vlinder will be called Mondriaan. For all the other building names, and a new campus map check out www.utwente.nl/gebouwnamen.
