Sniffing for jobs

Over 115 companies will take part in the annual Company Days event on the UT campus, the week of September 29 to October 8. In a specially equipped event hall on the Ganzenveld (the field next to the Drienerlolaan), students from both the Saxion and UT can familiarize themselves with future career opportunities. The organization hopes to draw two thousand visitors.

The Company Days Twente will offer a varied program with company presentations, training courses, personal conversations and a two-day information market. Among the participating large and small companies are regional, national and international enterprises.

`The corporate world needs new employees. This is particularly true for the information technology companies, but we have also selected a varied range of businesses,' says Hans Bakker, public relations officer and IT Company Days board member.

This year's theme is `Broaden your horizon,' which has a double meaning. Students should look further than the end of their own nose to discover opportunities, and the organizers want to also attract younger visitors. That is why the Company Days will offer visitors a broader approach. `Last year we focused on attracting master's students from the UT, and now we're also targeting bachelor's students from the Saxion, who are in their third and fourth year,' explains public relations officer, Stefan van Duijvenboden, who is hoping the event will attract at least two thousand visitors.

Students can come in contact with companies at the information market to look for future jobs. They can also explore the possibilities for a bachelor's assignment or an internship position. There are introduction meetings outside the UT to make the conversations a bit more informal and activities like golf clinics, carting and company dinners, where pre-selected students dine with recruiters.

This year the Company Days will be organized for the 25th time. Due to this jubilee, there is a special attraction during the kick-off on Thursday September 18: Scad diving. `It's like bungee jumping, but without a cord. A crane will hoist a cage to 50 meters, from which you can jump into a net that is 25 meters below. That is 25 meters of free falling in the air,' says Bakker.

Yet another jubilee activity is the party on Wednesday September 24 at the Aspen Valley on the Oude Markt. This party is being organized together with student associations and will be free to attend for everyone. A well-known DJ will be performing, probably Willie Wartaal of the Jeugd van Tegenwoordig (a Dutch hip-hop act).

On the eve of the Company Days, September 25, the UTNieuws will publish its annual Carrièrekrant (career newspaper). In this special publication, information about the lives and work of recently graduated students can be found.

For international students, the website is offered in English: http://www.bedrijvendagentwente.nl/home/
