Chasing a new horizon, historical studies of ancient cultures

A native of southern India, Ashok Sridhar was born in Tamil Nadu in 1980. He obtained his bachelor’s degree at the University of Madras, after which he worked for a year as a graduate engineer trainee at Caterpillar Inc. Following academic pursuits, he came to Germany in 2002 to earn his master’s at the reputed Aachen University of Technology (RWTH), during which he interned at DaimlerAG (Mercedes Benz). Subsequently, he took up a research position at the Production Technology group of Professor Remko Akkerman at the UT.

Skies of gliders

The local Twente airport is hosting the Dutch gliding championships this year. Over 50 gliders will be in the air over Twente from 13 to 23 May. Only contestants have access to the airport, but of course the gliders can be seen from the area around the airport as well.

De Alumnus: Zorgboer en melkveehouder

Werken aan grote bouwprojecten trok oud-student civiele techniek Lodewijk Pool (34) niet zo. Na een reikicursus in India en Nepal besloot hij het boerenbedrijf van zijn vader in Bennekom over te nemen. Drie middagen per week doen zijn erf en stallen dienst als zorgboerderij. `Lekker buiten werken, je kinderen veel zien en toch iets bijdragen aan de maatschappij.'

Het Apparaat (10): Ramanmicroscoop

In ons immuunsysteem speelt een groot aantal complexe processen een rol. Zo hebben witte bloedcellen van het type neutrofiele granulocyt de taak om ziektekiemen in hun celwand op te sluiten en te vernietigen. Bij mensen met de zeldzame ernstige ziekte CGD (chronische granulomatose) werken deze neutrofielen niet goed. Deze patiënten lopen - ondanks dagelijks medicijngebruik - het risico om andere levensbedreigende ziektes op te lopen. Onderzoek met de ramanmicroscoop van de vakgroep medische celbiofysica (TNW, MIRA/MESA+) heeft tot meer inzicht in de ziekte geleid. Dit apparaat is namelijk in staat om te bepalen waar in een cel bepaalde moleculen zich bevinden.

Spookhuis en horrorwals

Een angstaanjagend lustrumfeest vierde damesdispuut Spooky afgelopen zaterdag in Mystiek Theater Enschede. Alle ruim tweehonderd gasten, waarvan zo'n 45 dispuutsleden, werden bij binnenkomst eerst een spookhuis ingestuurd. Later op de avond voerden mannen met gasmaskers een horrordans op en begaven de figuren uit het spookhuis zich op de dansvloer om de gasten opnieuw schrik aan te jagen. Dit hele jaar vieren de `spookjes' dat hun onafhankelijk dispuut twintig jaar bestaat. Het lustrum draagt als thema The roaring Twenties. Alle feestgangers kregen daarom een typische gadget uit die periode. Voor de mannen was dat een glitterhoed, voor de vrouwen een bandje met een veertje eraan.

Krabbel van invloed op baankansen

Krabbels, foto’s en vrolijk gepimpte Hyves-profielen. Aardig en vermakelijk, maar wie solliciteert doet er beter aan zijn of haar pagina goed af te schermen. Uit het masteronderzoek van communicatiewetenschapstudent Kirsten van Wingerden blijkt dat recruiters hun mening over kandidaten mede laten bepalen door de krabbels (berichtjes van anderen) op de Hyves-pagina’s van de sollictant.

Pool Evening

The PhD Network of the University of Twente known as P-NUT, a platform for PhD-related issues, organizes a Pool evening for all PhD students. It takes place at Go Planet on 19 May, from 8pm until 11pm. For only 5 euro, participants will receive a half liter of beer, a Döner and free access to the pool tables. Students can join in a round of poker or game of darts. Space is limited to 25 participants, so register quickly by email with ‘Pool eve’ in the subject line p-nut@utwente.nl.

Herring party

Free drinks, salty herring and live music will be provided during the Faculty Club Herring Party on 17 June. All UT employees are invited to join the party and bid on a small barrel of the oily fish, a Dutch national delicacy. The profit of the auction will go to the charity AADHAAR, a foundation aiding the underprivileged in India. The party begins at 4.30pm until 7pm, and the entrance is free.

FC Twente Championship

Enschede or actually the entire Twente region celebrated the championship of its soccer team with a massive two-day celebration, marking the first time in history FC Twente earned the title of national champions. An estimated 40,000 fans flooded the Old Market and Van Heekplein, leaving behind a blanket of paper debris, special editions of the Tubantia and piles of plastic beer cups. For the occasion, brewery Grolsch has created a special beer called “Trots” (the Dutch word for proud) which is available at most supermarkets.

Vuurwerkramp: Tien jaar later

Tijdens de Enschedese vuurwerkramp, morgen tien jaar geleden, verloren ruim vijftig studenten en bijna twintig medewerkers hun huis en bezittingen. In de maanden na de ramp sprak UT-Nieuws met betrokken studenten en medewerkers over hun ervaringen, de nasleep en de verwerking. Vier van hen komen in deze special opnieuw aan het woord. Tien jaar later.

Tekenen en schilderen hielp beter dan verwerkingsgroepje

Zo’n tweeëneenhalf jaar duurde de psychische nasleep van de Vuurwerkramp voor het gezin van UT-medewerkers Leo van der Wegen en Brigit Geveling. Maar de komende herdenking maakt bij hen geen grote emoties meer los. Leo: ‘Voor mij is het historie.’ Brigit: ‘Voor mij ligt dat iets anders.’ De kinderen: ‘Met ons gaat het goed.’
