How often do you interact with Dutch students? Why don’t more internationals become members of student associations? Do you feel left out because you don’t speak Dutch? Those were some of the questions asked at today’s lunch discussion, organized by the Student Internationalization Platform and aimed at international students.
Ask international students what it’s like to find accommodation on the UT campus and they’ll likely all tell you the same thing: it’s not easy. UT Nieuws met with 8 campus residents to get their perspective on housing of international students.
The university is currently working on new plans to guarantee housing for international students. Student Union (SU) therefore decided to organize a housing forum, where UT students could discuss these new plans.
Pre-U, a UT program for primary and secondary school pupils, is no longer aimed only at Dutch students. From now on, The Pre-University wants to include more and more international pupils in its activities and it is starting by organizing a German-Dutch seminar this week.
The UT recently opened its own office in India, primarily geared towards recruiting students. At the helm of this new office is Sudha Sudeep, aided by Satya Ramesh. Both ladies were visiting the UT campus last week to become properly acquainted.
‘Diversity is not only right, it is the only way,’ Prof. Liudvika Leisyte began today’s FFNT conference titled ‘Openness to diversity: Integrating local and global perspectives’, event which aimed to raise awareness about the importance of international talent at the University of Twente.
This year’s Henk Zijm Award went to Yonas Negash, the president of UniTe. This annual award is given to a UT student or organization that makes a special contribution to the internationalization of the university.
ITC (Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation) officially began its academic year today. New ITC students were welcomed not only by the faculty's dean, Professor Tom Veldkamp, but also by Daniel E. Irwin, a research scientist from NASA.

'More cooperation between business administration and technology can be beneficial to the mission of the University of Twente,' says Iftekhar Hasan, Professor of Finance from the Fordham University in New York and a guest professor at the UT. As a renowned expert, he has been invited to assist with new research initiatives and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The University of Twente has expanded its network of international partners, which now includes IRCAD and IHU, top French institutes dedicated to innovative surgery. Today, on the 8th of March 2016, all involved parties attended a kick-off meeting at the UT to celebrate this new collaboration in the fields of education and research.
Finding a suitable accommodation near the UT is often problematic for international students. They usually don´t speak Dutch, they come from different continents and completely different cultures and they often need to travel. To find a person, who is willing to rent to them, is therefore extremely difficult. According to students, this situation is not made easier by the university, which provides internationals with maximum of one year of accommodation.
