Opnieuw geen ERC Advanced Grant voor UT

De Europese onderzoeksraad ERC heeft 27 advanced grants van maximaal 2,5 miljoen euro toegekend aan onderzoekers van Nederlandse kennisinstellingen. Daarmee kunnen ze de komende vijf jaar aan baanbrekend onderzoek werken. Voor het derde jaar op rij gaat er geen Advanced Grant naar een UT’er.

UT professor David Marpaung has been awarded the Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). The scientist will receive 2,55 million euros for his project TRIFFIC, which aims to develop an advanced 3D integrated circuit that brings together light and sound waves.

Geen ERC Advanced Grant voor UT

Slechts één op de twaalf aanvragers van een prestigieuze advanced grant bij de Europese Onderzoeksraad was in 2020 succesvol. Geen enkele UT’er sleepte de beurs in de wacht. Nederland scoort wel weer goed, met 17 van de 209 beurzen.

Optical computer to solve complex problems

Solving optimization problems in, for example, parcel deliveries, where packages have to be delivered using the shortest and quickest route, can be a difficult task, even for a computer. Jan Klärs, UT assistant professor in Nanophotonics, is planning to develop a completely new, highly efficient computer that works with light to study and better understand complex optimization problems. The European Research council awarded his research a so-called ‘Consolidator Grant’ of two million euros for five years.
