‘As scientists, we are too divorced from our societies’

‘I hope this will be interesting enough for you, because I have a rather unusual story.’ She does indeed. Connie Nshemereirwe (45) is a scientist through and through, but this UT alumna is not following the traditional path of a researcher. She has stepped out of academia in order to have more impact on society. Now, self-employed and independent, the Ugandan actively creates a bridge between science and policy - as a trainer, writer, speaker and as the co-chair of the Global Young Academy.

‘It’s not all about achievements’

‘Sometimes I think I’d like to step out of my busy schedule, but I really enjoy what I do. I do plenty of challenging things,’ says Kees Venner and one can only agree. The UT professor rode his motorcycle to Israel right after the First Gulf War, he jumped out of an airplane and, as a daily challenge, he trains and walks five big dogs. He leads a research group. And he seems to handle it all with the precision and mindfulness of a karate ‘master’ – which he also happens to be.

Four months of complete darkness and a high risk of being attacked by a polar bear. Those are just some of the dangers ITC alumnus Vishnu Nandan will be facing soon. This Friday, the researcher is embarking on the largest polar expedition in history.

‘Soms zit alles tegen, maar houd vertrouwen’

Beril Sirmaçek (35) is postdoc bij de faculteit EWI, waar ze werkt aan artificiële intelligentie voor de medische sector. Ze heeft haar eigen bedrijf en ontwikkelde de farmAR-app, waarmee landeigenaren via satellieten de gezondheid van hun land monitoren. Ze noemt zichzelf ‘the vegan’, schreef een kinderboek over het wonder van de liefde en gelooft dat alles een reden heeft.

Jubilerend SNT pleit voor campus als digitale speeltuin

Toen in 1994 het CAMPUSnet iedere UT’er aansloot op het internet, zag ook Studenten Net Twente het levenslicht. De zelfbenoemde ‘nerds’ van SNT zijn nu al 25 jaar co-beheerder van het campusnetwerk en dé eerste hulp voor studenten met computerproblemen. ‘We moeten de campus als digitale speeltuin houden.’

‘Het onderwijs denkt te veel in kaders’

Barend van der Meulen is met recht een boemerang-UT’er te noemen. Hij werkte twee keer eerder bij de UT en is nu weer terug. Dit keer als hoogleraar bij de vakgroep CHEPS. Vergeten zijn ze hem niet. ‘Ik werd alweer benaderd door mijn oude voetbalteam.’
