Kritiek op kritiek op kritiek

‘Kritiek is alleen zinnig als het constructief is en je meedenkt over een oplossing.’ Een misverstand dat ik de laatste tijd zo vaak gehoord heb dat ik er deze maand maar een stukje papier en wat pixels aan wijd. Het is een vorm van ‘tu quoque’, een ad hominem drogredenering waarbij een claim wordt tegengesproken door naar een ermee verband houdende eigenschap van de criticus te verwijzen, in dit geval het niet hebben van een beter voorstel.

Mooi op papier

Op 18 november vorig jaar publiceerde UT Nieuws dat ‘de UT aan alle standaarden van de instellingstoets voldoet en “in control” is’, aldus de auditcommissie. In eerste instantie vond ik het goed nieuws: zakken voor die toets had een flink aantal studenten een waardeloos papiertje kunnen bezorgen. Daarbovenop zou de UT met een gebrandmerkt imago zitten zoals Inholland en Ibn Ghaldoun, twee instellingen die hun zaakjes op verschillende gebieden niet op orde hadden.

Besnijdenis

Als het puur over wetenschap zou gaan, dan was het een gemakkelijke beslissing geweest. Nee, je moet een jongen niet besnijden als daar geen medische noodzaak toe is. De voorhuid is een nuttig stukje vel, dat beter gewoon op zijn plek blijft. Daar beschermt het de uiterst gevoelige eikel tegen schurende zaken als luiers en onderbroeken, en zorgt ervoor dat de man in kwestie goed kan blijven plassen en vrijen. Zonder voorhuid krijgt tot twintig procent van de mannen een dichtgeslibde plasbuis en heeft elf procent moeite met klaarkomen. Bovendien loopt besnijden soms helemaal verkeerd af. Naar schatting overlijden in de Verenigde Staten elk jaar honderd kinderen aan dit ritueel. De Nederlandse artsenfederatie KNMG raadt het zomaar-besnijden van jongetjes dan ook af.
