Coffee Break Lecture: Pythagoras's Trousers

Margaret Wertheim will give a lecture on science and gender. Wertheim is an internationally noted science writer and commentator, and author of Pythagoras Trousers: God, Physics, and the Gender Wars. The book presents a social and cultural history of physics and explores how the development of physics has been intertwined with the rising power of institutionalized religion, and how both these predominantly masculine pursuits have influenced women's ability to join the physics community, the science itself, and the picture of reality it portrays.

Goede beoordeling Twentse bestuurskunde

De kwaliteit van de bachelor- en masteropleiding bestuurskunde van de faculteit BBT is positief beoordeeld door een visitatiecommissie onder leiding van de Leuvense hoogleraar Rudolf Maes. Er is ingespeeld op de ontwikkelingen in het vakgebied en internationaal neemt de opleiding een vooraanstaande positie in. De andere opleidingen in den lande volgen in het spoor van Twente.

Raad stelt zich voor

Nieuw collegejaar, nieuwe voorzitter, nieuwe studentengeleding en een bijna nieuw college van bestuur. Dat was wel een voorstelrondje waard, vond Dick Meijer. En dan niet de dingen vertellen die we al weten, maar iets originelers. En dus onthulde de kersverse voorzitter zelf zijn grote hobby, scheidsrechter spelen bij het jeugdvoetbal. Aansluitend liet hij weten in plaats van de voorzittershamer voortaan een fluitje te gaan hanteren. En daar bleef het niet bij. `Bij bestuurlijke obstructie van de universiteitsraad deel ik voortaan een rode kaart uit, bij zinloos verbaal geweld van het college een gele kaart.'

Denktank

Acht studenten industrieel ontwerpen sleepten vorige week de hoofdprijs van de denktank Create Tomorrow in de wacht. Lunch Lecture: Space and Spirit

In the Middle Ages, two types of space existed - material and spiritual - with greater importance being placed on the latter. Nowadays, this spiritual element has vanished. In this lecture, the evolution of the Western notion of space will be traced from the dualistic Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. Margaret Wertheim will show how spiritual space was written out of the realism of reality, a transformation whose psychological consequences we are still struggling with today.

Ongepast voorstel, maar keuzemodel blijft op peil 2005

De verbazing van de vakbonden was groot toen zij in het voorjaar een brief van het college ontvingen waarin het college voorstelde om het keuzemodel arbeidsvoorwaarden voor het grootste deel af te schaffen: het inzetten van verlofdagen voor zaken als fiets, extra pensioen, extra loon (dit jaar kunnen personeelsleden voor het eerst 2 dagen laten uitbetalen) en dergelijke zou geblokkeerd moeten worden omdat het de UT financieel slecht gaat.

Maandag beleeft de jaarlijks terugkerende Jazzdag in de Vrijhof haar tiende editie. Een mooie gelegenheid om goed uit te pakken dacht medeorganisator Jazz Podium Drienerlo. Vandaar dat de Jazzdag voor deze gelegenheid omgetoverd is tot een Jazzweek. Acht concerten staan in totaal op het programma.

Mathematics skills of freshmen dramatic low

Only four percent of the freshman technology students at the UT have the mathematics skills required to complete their program. A recent math entry exam, held to test that knowledge, revealed some dramatic results. The situation is not much better at the other TUs. A pressing letter is being sent to the Minister.
