UT does good business in China

A UT delegation comprised of Rector Ed Brinksma, Professors Job van Amerongen (Faculty EWI) and Chinese-born Professor Bob Su from the ITC Faculty recently returned from a trip to China. The delegation visited with representatives at Southeast University in Nanjing and East China Normal University in Shanghai, where the ITC Faculty had already established contacts.

Flashmob

Wie donderdag 9 september rond één uur over de Boulevard liep, was getuige van Scintilla's poging een flashmob neer te zetten. De studievereniging van elektrotechniek bestaat 45 jaar en viert dat een week lang. Het thema is secret agent. Donderdag waren er zo'n vijftig geheim agenten, bewapend met klappertjespistool, op de Boulevard. De verbaasde reacties die een flashmob normaal moet opleveren, bleven grotendeels uit. De studenten hadden vooral veel lol onder elkaar.

Meet Enschede

The International Students Meet Enschede event will be held this year on the Saxion premises and square. The event is organized for 1,000 newly arrived students studying at the ITC Faculty, Saxion and University of Twente on 25 September, starting at 2:30pm. Learn how to ride a bike or join in a Dutch language and culture lesson. Marijke van Hees, deputy mayor of Enschede, will offer opening words.

Energy Vision

Sustainability is the buzz word of the new academic year. The Executive Board endorsed an ‘Energy Vision’ plan to adopt active measures that could decrease energy consumption by 30 percent in 2020. The UT hopes to use 20 percent less energy, saving another 10 percent by switching to more renewable energy sources and encourage the use of sustainable means of transport from home to work, and for business travel.

Spinning

Drievoudig Nederlands kampioen wielrennen en winnaar van twee Tour-etappes Michael Boogerd opende afgelopen dinsdag de Gezonde Week 2010 met twee spinningclinics. In het sportcentrum joeg hij zo'n honderd fanatieke studenten en medewerkers in het zweet.

Rector on radio program

Ed Brinksma, the rector mangnificus, was guest on the Dutch radio program ‘Het Ochtendhumeur’ (Morning Humor) with presenters Martin Steenbeeke and Jan Medendorp last weekend. Listeners could hear the rector’s eclectic taste in music which was played during the broadcast and listen to his opinions on a range of subjects.

Urban Challenge

For the third year in a row, the launch of the Cordaid Urban Challenge starts today. Teams will develop new concepts for non-motorized transport with an emphasis on bicycles for use in the Mayatta slum area in Kisumu, Kenya. There are 37 university students registered from the Centre for Studies of Technology and ITC who will be paired with Kenyan students. The teams will design a project proposal and use a webcam to communicate between the two countries, the Netherlands and Kenya. Ghanaian Emmanuel Kofi Gavu, a member of last year’s runner-up team, will be lecturing and presenting material for the project on 30 September. Intern alarm werkt efficiënter

Zo'n vier of vijf keer per jaar komt het voor dat UT-medewerkers of -studenten bij een noodgeval alarmnummer 112 bellen. Dat lijkt logisch, maar dat is het niet volgens BHV-coördinator Henk Bleijerveld. `Het interne alarmnummer 2222 werkt efficiënter.'

Cremer Museum

Interactive art displays, robot sculptures with human traits and meters-high space invaders are all part of the new exhibition called ‘Urban Explorer’ at the Cremer Museum. The exhibition consists of site specific artwork that shows the changing position of the art institution within an urban environment. Chemie tussen cellen en biomoleculen

Pascal Jonkheijm (32), onderzoeker bij de vakgroep Molecular Nanofabrication van MESA+, heeft een persoonsgebonden ERC Starting Grant gekregen van 1,5 miljoen. Met deze subsidie van de European Research Council wil hij de komende vijf jaar onderzoek doen naar de chemie tussen verschillende biomoleculen en cellen.
