Innovatieve leermiddelen

UT-hoogleraar Ton de Jong (onderwijspsychologie) is vorige maand gestart als coördinator van de onderzoekslijn `Innovatieve leermiddelen' uit het NWO-programma Hersenen en Cognitie, onderdeel Leren. Uit de FES-gelden is hiervoor 4,5 miljoen euro beschikbaar gesteld. Eén promotieonderzoek binnen dit programma wordt aan de UT uitgevoerd. Een aio zal zich bezighouden met hoe leerlingen kunnen leren door zelf modellen te maken.

Strengere controle, leeftijd naar 18

In de strijd tegen alcoholmisbruik onder jongeren valt de meeste winst te boeken op het naleven van de leeftijdsgrenzen voor verkoop. Volgende week verdedigt promovendus Joris van Hoof (communicatiewetenschap, faculteit GW) zijn dissertatie Sweet sixteen and never been drunk?. Wat hem betreft gaat de leeftijdsgrens naar achttien jaar en gaat de overheid strenger controleren.

Van Vught erehoogleraar

Oud-rector en CvB-voorzitter Frans van Vught (60) is benoemd tot Honorary Professorial Fellow van de University of Melbourne in Australië. Daarmee is hij erehoogleraar van deze gerenommeerde universiteit die volgens de meest recente Shanghai Ranking op plaats 63 in de wereld staat. Van Vught is al eredoctor van de universiteiten van Gent en Glasgow.

Science `vertaalt' artikelen voor bacheloronderwijs

Het vooraanstaande tijdschrift Science gaat in 2011 artikelen annoteren om bachelorstudenten te helpen bij het begrijpen van het wetenschappelijke proces. Dit project, Science in the classroom, richt zich primair op de Amerikaanse markt, maar ook Nederlandse universiteiten kunnen het materiaal gaan gebruiken. UT-hoogleraar onderwijspsychologie Ton de Jong zit (als enige niet-Amerikaan) in de Advisory Board van het project.

US in Enschede

Enschede has been hit by American retro. The Rijksmuseum is featuring ‘Abstract USA 1958-1968’, an exhibition of abstract American sixties art work. At the same time, Concordia cinema is showing the ‘American Retro’ film series on three subsequent Thursday nights. Classic road movie Easy Rider is followed by Factory Girl, documenting 1960s pop art icon Edie Sedgwick’s life. The third movie, a YouTube-based documentary, focuses on the artists behind ‘Abstract USA’.

Ontwerpwedstrijd

De opleiding Creative Technology is gestart met een ontwerpwedstrijd. Studenten van alle opleidingen kunnen tot 14 november een foto van hun ontwerp insturen via de website van de faculteit EWI. Het winnende ontwerp wordt afgedrukt op twintigduizend Boomerang-kaarten, en de winnaar krijgt 500 euro.

Moral language

Famous American moral philosopher and essayist professor Susan Neiman pleads in her upcoming Studium Generale lecture for a revaluation of moral reasoning. Certain events in the last century have led to the conviction that moral concepts have been widely abused. Many people perceive human action to be solely driven by self-interest. Neiman first will explore the origin and limitations of this claim in her lecture. She will then argue that we still need moral concepts to understand and change the world. The lecture is in English.

Things are cooking

The yearly International Food Festival brings together all the diverse culinary talents on campus under one roof. As part of the annual Let’s Go study abroad fair, students will get the chance to cook food and visitors can then taste national cuisines from all over the world. Trip to Cologne

The Erasmus Student Network organizes a visit to Cologne or as the city is called in Germany: Köln. Try the tasty Kölsch beer and enter Cologne’s magnificent cathedral which overlooks the old city. Students will depart on Friday 26 November and stay for the weekend in the heart of the city center. Only 30 places are available for those interested and registration for the event begins on 9 November. Organizers estimate expenses for the trip are around € 60.
