Baan in ‘Milieuhoofdstad van Duitsland’

Duurzaamheid is hot. Maar in Freiburg is het dat al dertig jaar. De stad grossiert in onderscheidingen voor haar beleid, telt tienduizend arbeidsplaatsen in de duurzaamheidsbusiness en huisvest een handvol topinstituten en kennisinstellingen met specialisaties in deze sector. Een daarvan is het Europese hoofdkwartier van Iclei, een wereldwijde belangenvereniging van 1200 gemeenten die zich met duurzaamheid bezighouden. Bestuurskunde-alumnus Ruud Schuthof (32) is er director strategic services.

Taste the sweet food normally associated with this celebration, marking the break of a month-long fasting ritual.

Exotic Java

The Indonesian Students Association (PPIE) presents an art and cultural afternoon, ‘Indonesian Day, Exploring the Exotic Java’, on Saturday 4 December from 1pm to 5:30pm in the Bastille atrium. Boosting the 13th largest island in the world, Java is made up of a chain of volcanic mountains where the Dutch East India Company established its trading in the capital city of Jakarta. PPIE members will share with visitors Java’s exotic culture with traditional dances and music, a live band, games and workshops, and fragrant Indonesian food.

Ahead of nano

Filmmaker Machteld Aardse has captured the fascinating history of the acre of land on which the UT nanotechnology laboratory was built. Her short film ‘The Island’ tells of clashing land use ideologies at the backdrop of a changing Zeitgeist, struggling architects and discarded ecological dreams. The film is on show at the Taiwan Documentary Film Festival, and it premieres in the Amphitheater on Thursday 25 November at 5.30pm.The movie is coupled with an exposition in the Vrijhof’s small exhibition space, on display until 5 December.

Livestream

Studievereniging Inter-Actief is dinsdag host van de live-uitzending van het TEDx, de lokale variant van het Amerikaanse Technology, Entertainment, Design(TED) congres. In de VS stonden op deze bijeenkomst mensen als Bill Clinton, Bob Geldof, Peter Gabriel, Bill Gates, en Al Gore op de sprekerslijst. TEDx wordt op 30 november in Amsterdam georganiseerd. De studievereniging is benaderd om een hostlocatie te vinden voor de uitzending van deze editie. In het Educafé op de campus is van kwart voor negen ’s morgens tot negen uur ’s avonds de livestream te zien. Het programma en sprekers zijn te vinden op www.tedxamsterdam.com.

Nóg minder kans op NWO-beurs

De kans op succes wordt steeds kleiner voor wetenschappers die een talentenbeurs aanvragen bij onderzoeksfinancier NWO. Minder dan zestien procent van de indieners kon dit jaar een Vidi-beurs krijgen.

Sijbolt Noorda van universiteitenvereniging VSNU zal Doekle Terpstra missen. Dat zegt hij in een reactie op diens overstap van de HBO-raad naar de Hogeschool Inholland.
