Are you a post-graduate about to finish either your Master or PhD? Then the upcoming National PhD Congress on the weekend of 11 and 12 March may be of interest to you. It aims to inspire future PhD-students to broaden their knowledge about the various options a PhD has to offer. Attendees have the chance to meet with top employers and representatives of educational institutions. St. Patrick's Day

The Irish national holiday is around the corner and this year plans are set for a big party. Join the fantastic folk band Cloggy Dew when they perform their best songs which might make you feel homesick for Ireland – even if you never stepped foot in the country. Besides the rollicking music, Saint Patrick’s enthusiasts can also swig down a real Irish whiskey or a pint of hearty Guinness. The party takes place in the Atrium and Vestingbar on 17 March. Lost bike

Should you fail to spot your bike when returning from a visit to the Waaier building or another building on the Education and Research square, do not panic: it may not have been stolen. If you stored it out of a standard bicycle stand or rack, the UT’s Facility Service Centre employees may have simply transported it to the Langezijd building or another bicycle shed.To find out the precise relocation spot of your bicycle, people can inquire at the reception.

Salsa Magistral

Want to learn salsa dance steps? Would you like to impress your friends with smooth moves on the dance floor? Then you can begin with salsa courses at Salsa Magistral. The balmy atmosphere during the lessons is inviting and cozy. Practice the different dances at your own pace and in your own timeslot. Several classes are offered at different levels. SHOT and Samoen

A double concert will be held at the Vrijhof on 31 March. The upbeat venue features the university's student orchestra SHOT and saxophone quartet Samoen. Both will perform several pieces on their own, so the audience can distinguish their different qualities. And during the finale of the concert, SHOT and Samoen will join musical talents for a couple of compositions. Originally, the idea for a collaboration evolved from an earlier concert, with SHOT saxophonist Esli Vogel, when she performed last summer for her final exam at Fontys Conservatorium in Tilburg. BataChallenge

Always wanted to know how running times of a race are officially recorded? Or how the results are published? The biggest dispatch-race of the Netherlands, the Batavierenrace, is in need of a new and better time registration system. Do you have a brilliant new idea on how to improve the existing system? Fraude met basisbeurs twee keer zo erg als gedacht

De fraude met de basisbeurs voor uitwonenden is veel omvangrijker dan gedacht. Het gesjoemel kost de overheid jaarlijks 40 à 55 miljoen euro. Eerder werd uitgegaan van 27 miljoen euro.

Scholieren discussiëren over droomschool

Wil je het liefst thuis les krijgen? Heb je genoeg aan een computerjuffrouw? Hoe belangrijk zijn klasgenoten eigenlijk voor je en hoe ziet jouw favoriete school eruit? In gebouw Ravelijn discussieerden afgelopen maandag zo’n veertig basisschoolleerlingen uit groep zeven en acht over deze vragen. Het zogeheten Lagerhuisdebat, georganiseerd door de UT en Twente Academy Young, is onderdeel van het programma Seven days of inspiration dat nog tot 6 maart loopt. Doel van het initiatief is ideeënontwikkeling waarbij goed of fout niet bestaan.

Cocktailparty

De Vestingbar organiseert op dinsdag 1 maart de tweede editie van cocktailparty XL. De organisatie verwacht een kleine duizend man bezoekers. Naast de Vestingbar zelf en het Atrium is ook de Union-bar geopend als loungeruimte. Er zijn drie nieuw samengestelde cocktails te proeven naast het reguliere aanbod. Bandjeswedstrijd Batavierenrace

Het Evenementenbureau van de Universiteit Twente en cultuurkoepel Apollo organiseren in samenwerking met UT Nieuws een bandjeswedstrijd tijdens het Batavierenfeest op zaterdag 7 mei. In een feesttent, met plek voor duizend man, gaan na een eerste voorselectie vijf studentenbands de strijd met elkaar aan op het podium. In twintig minuten mogen ze laten horen wat ze in huis hebben. De winnaar krijgt een podiumplek tijdens het voorprogramma van Campuspop 2011 op vrijdag 10 juni. Grote namen als Anouk, Candy Dulfer, Caro Emerald en Waylon zullen die dag ook optreden. Meedingen naar een plek in de finale kan door een demo op te sturen naar de redactie van UT Nieuws t.a.v. Sandra Pool, Drienerlolaan 5, 7500 AE Enschede, Vrijhof kamer 328.
