Waanzinnig wat ik laatst las. ‘De technologische ontwikkelingen gaan zo snel, dat de stof die een technologiestudent in het eerste jaar heeft gekregen op het moment van zijn afstuderen alweer verouderd is.’ Mijn eerste gedachte was: wat leren ze dan in het eerste jaar? De nieuwe collectie gadgets van de Mediamarkt? Is die eerstejaars leerstof echt zo bederfelijk?

Het was een nogal krachteloze aftrap van Juliano Pinto, een 29-jarige Braziliaan. De bal rolde zachtjes naar voren en bleef anderhalve meter verder weer liggen. Toch was die start van het Wereldkampioenschap voetbal op 12 juni 2014 een indrukwekkend bewijs van waartoe de technologie in staat was: Pinto kon normaal niet eens zijn grote teen bewegen, want zijn onderlichaam is verlamd. Tijdens zijn optreden staken zijn benen in een exoskelet dat hij aanstuurde met zijn brein. Elektroden vingen de hersengolven op die een computer vervolgens vertaalde naar een beweging van het skelet.

Ik vind het moeilijk soms. Mijn naaste lief te hebben als mijzelf. De jihadist, meneer Wilders, eenzijdige journalisten, de ontevreden gelukszoeker, een schreeuwende Facebooker die het betreurt dat zijn haast verdronken medemens niet helemaal kopje onder is gegaan.
