Device for DNA testing at crime scenes

A device that would allow the police to screen for DNA samples directly at crime scenes – that was the focus of Brigitte Bruijns’ doctoral research. Although she didn’t create a prototype of the device – due to lack of time and funding -, she is confident it is possible. The forensic scientist is defending her PhD thesis at the UT on Friday.

Most popular courses for PhD candidates fill up too quickly, it is not always clear which courses are available, and the PhD course offering lacks structure overall. ‘That’s why we are going to organise the course offering better, increase the number of dates on which people can get started, and work with an annual calendar,’ says Paul van Dijk, director of the Twente Graduate School.

PhD candidates rate their programme

On average, PhD candidates at the University of Twente (UT) rate their PhD programme with a 7,4, according to a PhD survey. Fifty percent of the doctoral candidates completed the questionnaire last autumn. ‘A good result, especially because we still see room for improvement.’

'Edwin, you are an Ironman!'

PhD-student en Alohaan Edwin Dollekamp (26) deed afgelopen weekend mee aan de uitputtende Ironman triatlon op Mallorca, die bestaat uit 3,8 kilometer zwemmen, 180 kilometer wielrennen en een marathonafstand van 42,2 kilometer. Dollekamp finishte in 13 uur, 15 minuten en 21 seconden.
