‘I’ve always felt like we are one big family at ITC’

When Saskia Tempelman started working at ITC in 1977, she planned to stay for six months. Half a year turned into almost half a century, and she is now leaving the university after 45 years of service. ‘The world of ITC is really my world. I found my place here,’ she says in her farewell interview.

‘Een oplossing waar beide partijen tevreden mee zijn is altijd het beste'

Ruud Leether is sinds november de nieuwe voorzitter van de klachtencommissie op de UT en constateert ‘dat er veel goed gaat’. Toch waarschuwt hij ook dat we niet moeten doorschieten in een overkill aan regelingen en loketten. ‘Je ziet steeds meer mensen op een rem trappen in normale werkrelaties.’

Professor Lisette van Gemert-Pijnen will formally give her goodbyes to the UT this Friday with a farewell symposium after 37 years, but she is not leaving by any means. This farewell interview is therefore not only a glimpse of the past, but also a preview of what's to come. ‘We should put more effort into seeking out and emphasise our regional significance.’

‘If we can’t do it, who can?’

‘Making environmentally friendly choices doesn’t require much effort for me,’ says Brechje Maréchal (47), Environment & Sustainability Policy Officer at the University of Twente. Indeed, caring for nature seems to come naturally to her; but – as she mentions herself – sustainability can mean many different things. ‘I am trying to make the UT more sustainable, but that is not always sustainable for me.’

UT-studenten Lineke Polman en Kasper de Kruiff studeren samen op 27 januari af. En dat is best bijzonder als je moeder en zoon bent. Ook de afstudeerlocatie in het Amphitheater is speciaal: als theatersporters delen ze al jarenlang hetzelfde podium bij Pro Deo.

Met onder meer een UT-brede visie op het onderwijs en een nieuw talentbeleid in de steigers, vallen steeds meer puzzelstukjes op hun plek voor rector Tom Veldkamp. Aan de start van 2023 blikt hij vooruit op de bewegingen die de universiteit dit jaar inzet. ‘Gaat de werkdruk omlaag, dan doen we het goed.’

De loopbaan van UT-alumnus Tim van de Rijdt (40) is allesbehalve dertien in een dozijn. Na Newcom en Google werkt hij inmiddels als chief marketing officer bij kweekvleesbedrijf Mosa Meat. ‘We gokken niet op een massale gedragsverandering van de consument, daarom kweken we vlees.’

The career of UT alumnus Tim van de Rijdt (40) is anything but run-of-the-mill. After working for Newcom and Google, he is now Chief Marketing Officer at cultured meat company Mosa Meat. ‘We’re not counting on any mass consumer behaviour change; that’s why we cultivate meat.’
