Vertrouwen in elkaars onderwijs

Martijn van Velzen is een bevlogen docent aan de faculteit MB. Als hij ergens voor gaat, dan ook helemaal. En dat betekent in zijn vak dat Van Velzen vooral uitdagend en prikkelend onderwijs aan studenten wil bieden. Zo bedacht hij voor een groep masterstudenten een nieuwe opdracht, dat `alle elementen' van goed academisch onderwijs omvat.

Language connection

The Language Exchange Program, supported by the Student Union and ESN, lets users exchange their language skills with one another on a new, recently launched website. Students can post contact cards by making a profile that lists their language skills, later shown on their card as a flag. On the contact card, students can write the language(s) they'd like to learn. In turn, a connection is made when someone reacts to the `advertisement' and can schedule their first lesson. The program costs nothing and seems to provide a flexible way to learn another language.

Stricter punishment

Minister Plasterk plans to pass into law stricter penalties for scholarship fraud. His new proposed law will go before the House (Tweede Kamer) in the spring. Students who live with their parents receive a basic grant of 96 euro per month while students living independently receive 266 euro. Some students claim to live independently but are actually living with their parents, pocketing 170 euro from the government. The minister wants to clamp down on fraud and after the third offense, press criminal charges.

Climate controversy

In a 2007 report, the UN claimed that 55 percent of the Netherlands was below sea level. According to Dutch authorities, this claim is incorrect, as only 26 percent of the country is below sea level. The Netherlands have now asked the UN for clarification. The environment ministry spokesman said the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) inaccurately calculated the percentage by including both the area below sea level and the area threatened by river flooding. Exhibition

Inspired by water, five artists have created pieces of art work for the exhibition H2O+. Artists Dos Winkel, David Scheidler, Judith Hofmann, Jeanet Snijders and Tessa Vos contributed to the new exhibition, each with a unique form of art, such as photos, videos, paintings and sculptures. Student photograph association Foton also contributed photographs around the same theme of water. Visitors can view the exhibition in the Vrijhof building until 31 March.

Best Paper

Tijdens de belangrijkste Semiconductor Chip Conferentie, ISSCC2010, waar INTEL een 48-core processor chip presenteerde, werden vorige week ook de best paper awards voor ISSCC2009 uitgereikt. UT-medewerkers Zhiyu Ru, Eric Klumperink, Gerard Wienk en Bram Nauta van de IC Design groep van onderzoeksinstituut CTIT ontvingen daarbij de `Jan Van Vessem Best European Paper Award' voor hun paper A Software-Defined Radio Receiver Architecture Robust to Out-of-Band Interference.

Jonge politici in levendig debat

Bussen met UT-reclame in Hilversum en studieplekken met een horecavoorziening als La Place in de binnenstad. Die punten - en nog veel meer - wierpen de vier UT-studenten die kandidaat zijn voor de gemeenteraad, dinsdag op in het verkiezingsdebat dat deze krant organiseerde met studievereniging Sirius. Arjan Baan (CDA), Jeroen Diepemaat (VVD), Eelco Eerenberg (D66) en Jelle Kort (GroenLinks) bedienden zich bij vlagen van politieke retoriek die in de raadszaal niet zou misstaan.
