Geen bestuur, geen bedrijvendagen

Het bestuur van de Bedrijvendagen Twente, een carrière-evenement dat jaarlijks in oktober plaatsvindt, is er niet in geslaagd tijdig opvolgers aan te trekken. Het evenement zal daarom een half jaar vooruit geschoven worden, naar februari 2012.

'Kloppend hart na nieuws over meltdown’

‘Ik ben op dit moment mijn tas aan het pakken en ga zo naar het vliegveld Narita. Mijn ouders en de UT raadden mij met klem aan te vertrekken.’ Dat is het laatste bericht dat Mark Herink, student elektrotechniek aan de UT, afgelopen dinsdag vanaf zijn stageadres in het Japanse Tsukuba, zo’n 50 kilometer ten noordoosten van Tokio, naar de redactie mailde.

‘What does chemistry mean to you?’

What would happen to all of humanity if, with a single brushstroke, you wiped out all the contributions of chemistry from modern life? Say goodbye to pharmaceuticals to cure diseases. Forget about trying to log on your computer, turn on the television or send a text message. ‘Chemistry is essential,’ says Professor Julius Vancso, chair of the Materials Science and Technology of Polymers group. ‘Without it, we would all die a lot sooner. Look around, chemical structures are everywhere.’

Healthy living

Do you enjoy drinking beer, but sometimes regret its alcohol-induced effects? Or can you not consume beer because you are usually the assigned driver in your group of friends? To stimulate ‘responsible’ alcohol intake, local beer producer Grolsch has relaunched its once famous ‘Stender’ beer, as an alternative to standard beer. Low in calories but allegedly rich in taste, the pale lager contains just 0.5% alcohol by volume. The Enschede-brewed beer will be available at supermarkets and served in most pubs in Twente and beyond, from 23 March onwards.

The Praathuis

Do you already speak quite a bit of Dutch, but would you like to practice more? The volunteers of the Praathuis or conversation house are there to help. The volunteer staff are available to tutor and chat every Tuesday morning from 9:45am to 12:00pm. The Praathuis is located close to the city centre at Hoog & Droog 25 (opposite the water tower). The service is free-of-charge.

Uni gate

Following the lead of diplomats and governments, a university has become engulfed in Wikileaks’ cable gate revelations. The secret-spilling website recently published a diplomatic memo indicating that University of Durham received £300,000 from the U.S. State Department to organize several seminars and exchanges for Iranian academics, clerics and journalists. In exchange, the U.S. government could collect information on Iranian grassroots politics. The revelations have led to fears over the safety of Iranian academics with ties to Durham. Campus run

If you have been training for the Batavierenrace and want to know how you are getting along, you can test your condition and skills on 30 March, during the Kronos Campus run 2011. On the university grounds, the distance of the courses are two miles (3.2 km) or four miles (6.4 km). Get your name listed on the famous online Kronos register by signing up as a solo participate or with a team. The two races officially start at 7:30pm. Create Tomorrow

The fourth edition of a competitive think tank for students is organized by the Student Union of the University of Twente on Tuesday 21 April. Participants will work in teams to solve cases of business and governmental issues with support from professional consultants. Two keynote speakers at the student think tank are Maarten van Rossum, a writer and expert on American issues, and Bas Haring, a well-known scientific philosopher who is also a columnist for the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant and holds a professorship at the University of Leiden. De onbewuste invloed van vormen

Een etentje aan een ronde of vierkante tafel maakt wel degelijk verschil. We zijn ons er niet van bewust, maar vormgeving heeft invloed op wat we voelen en ervaren. Dat geldt in sterke mate wanneer we snel een beslissing moeten nemen. Dan laten we ons onbewust leiden door omgevingsfactoren. Psychologiestudent Jasper Kruijff doet er onderzoek naar. Hij bestudeert het effect van hoekige en ronde vormen. De vluchtige beslissingsmomenten van speeddates vormen de context. Wordt het wel of geen match?
