`Wij zijn de toekomst'

Studente onderwijskunde Mirjam van den Biggelaar (23) heeft de afgelopen weken nauwelijks kans gehad om te slapen. Ze staat nummer tien op de kandidatenlijst van de nieuwe jongerenpartij Lijst 17, een initiatief van omroep BNN. Dat betekent dag in dag uit campagne voeren voor de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen. Ze mikt op drie tot vijf zetels. `Maar met één zetel kunnen we ook al veel bereiken. Dan worden we echt serieus genomen.'

`Dit is een kans uit duizenden'

De telefoon staat roodgloeiend, ze vliegt van hot naar her, het aantal mailtjes met felicitaties stijgt gestaag, sponsors trekken aan haar en de media weten haar te vinden. De 24-jarige communicatiestudent Petra Smits is afgelopen vrijdag gekroond tot Miss Overijssel. Sindsdien zijn alle schijnwerpers op haar gericht. En daar geniet ze van. `Al die aandacht smaakt naar meer.'

Iranian friendship fuels research

Universiteitsraad verkiezingen

Studentleden en personeelsleden van UReka, de Campus Coalitie, Lijst Chairman, de PvdUT en PRO-UT voeren deze week al dan niet zichtbaar campagne voor de verkiezingen van de universiteitsraad. Tot en met morgenmiddag 12.00 uur is het voor de UT-bevolking nog mogelijk om online een stem uit te brengen voor het hoogste medezeggenschapsorgaan van de UT. Morgen om 17.00 uur maakt collegevoorzitter Anne Flierman de uitslag bekend in De Vleugel.

Lustrumconcert

Het Musica Silvestra Orkest bestaat 45 jaar en viert dat met twee concerten. Op 15 juni speelt MSO in museum TwentseWelle en op 17 juni op de campus. Het studentensymfonieorkest van de UT staat onder leiding van Frans Aert Burghgraef. Voor de jubileumconcerten is een gevarieerd programma opgesteld, met klassieke werken en muziek uit het theatergenre. Toegang is 6 euro en 3 euro, op vertoon van een Xtra-card. Oratie Hans de Groot

Hans de Groot, hoogleraar Public Management, houdt vanmiddag om 16.00 uur zijn oratie in de Vrijhof. De titel van zijn rede luidt: Evidence-based public management. De Groot betoogt dat de onderbouwing van overheidsbeleid nog veel te wensen overlaat. Een nieuw kabinet moet daarom meer investeren in onderzoek naar de kosteneffectiviteit van het beleid.

Cricket workshop

Join the Pakistani Student Association (PSA) in a rousing game of cricket on the artificial turf field next to the Sports Center on campus. Learn techniques of how to play this popular bat-and-ball team sport and the rules known as the Laws of Cricket. The association will provide snacks and refreshments during the workshop on 10 June at 5pm.

Sex-change party

The Erasmus Student Network is organizing a party on 4 June. The theme is sex-change, so the choice for an outfit is easy: guys dress up as girls and girls dress up as guys. The party will be held at Asterion in the Pakkerij building. It starts at 10.30pm and there is no entrance fee.

Win Macbook Pro

Nuffic is organizing a video competition to celebrate the first anniversary of the Study in Holland film. Make a video of your ultimate life experiences while studying in Holland and win a Macbook Pro. Students can work with a range of media to express themselves by using animation, film, music and photographs, as long as the contribution is between two and five minutes. Turkish Cultural Night

The Turkish Student Association at Twente (TUSAT) invites everyone to a night full of Turkish food, culture and tradition on 5 June. Enjoy Turkish cuisine, watch dance performances of folklore groups and listen to Turkish music from Karsu Dönmez and other artists. The festivities will take place at the Atrium in the Bastille building from 6pm until 2am. The entrance fee is 10 euro (8 euro for members). Register via info@tusat.org.

Pink Festival

The city center of Enschede will turn pink from 1 to 6 June as the first edition of the ‘Enschede opent Roze’ (Enschede opens pink) event will take place. The organization welcomes everyone with an ‘open mind’ to the event during which there will be art exhibitions at the Jannink museum, a film festival at Cineast, a travestite show, parade and many more activities.
