'Zwak fundament onder reorganisatieplan’

Voordat de universiteitsraad begin oktober het college adviseert – en een maand later al dan niet instemming verleent – over het reorganisatieplan, ligt de bal bij de faculteitsraden. De U-raad zal sterk afgaan op wat de lokale raden adviseren. Bij TNW, EWI en GW staan ze bepaald niet te juichen. ‘Het college van bestuur maakt de oorspronkelijke ambitie geen kaasschaaf te hanteren niet waar.’

‘Verwacht geen oplossingen’

Voor 24 vrouwelijke OBP’ers gaat maandag het eerste mentorentraject van start. In dit traject krijgen de medewerkers die zich hebben aangemeld de kans om aan hun loopbaan te werken. In een viertal gesprekken bespreken zij loopbaanvragen met een senior.

Eén groot wiskundevak voor alle technische studenten

De UT wil graag dat – naar Deens voorbeeld – vanaf 2013 alle technische studenten hetzelfde basiswiskundevak krijgen. Switchen van opleiding zonder studievertraging wordt zo eenvoudiger. Opleidingsdirecteur toegepaste wiskunde Jan Willem Polderman onderzoekt hoe zo’n vak eruit moet zien. Ook ziet hij mogelijkheden voor een kleiner wiskundevak voor de sociale opleidingen, en wellicht zelfs een introductiecursus wiskunde voor alle UT-eerstejaars.

Rhyme me to the moon

Can you imagine poets Dante, Tagore, and Rumi all in one room? Now put them together in a Lego church next to the Enschede train station. That’s where their poems will be read on Sunday, 25 September at 8pm in English as well as Italian and Persian. Rhyme Me to the Moon, Poetry and Prose from Around the World is just one of the many programs offered during the GrensWerk Festival in Enschede from 24 September to 2 October. Admission is free for the poetry evening which includes songs by French singer Katell.

Extra miljoenen Rijk naar herinrichten bacheloronderwijs

De 3TU’s krijgen de komende drie jaar 33 miljoen extra voor de verbetering van onderwijs, zo maakte staatssecretaris Zijlstra onlangs bekend. Voor de UT komt dit in neer op 8,7 miljoen euro, de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven krijgt 8,4 miljoen, en Delft krijgt 15,9 miljoen, voorlopig onderling verdeeld naar rato van de rijksbijdrage aan de instellingen. Maar waar gaat deze extra zak met geld op de UT naar toe?

Lasonder Church

The Lasonder Church, the church at Enschede's Lasondersingel (opposite the Rijksmuseum) is now opened to the public every first Saturday of the month from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Its interior and outsides are nearly the same as they were when this striking church was built between in 1926-1927. One of the reasons to open its doors to the public is the church was officially declared a state monument. Volunteers will be happy to tell you more about the history of this church. It is also possible to climb the steps of the church to enjoy a panoramic view of Enschede and the adjacent region. Entrance is free.

Opening ceremony

Rector Tom Veldkamp will open the academic year of the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) on 22 September in Enschede. Veldkamp will award the ITC Research Award for the best scientific paper written by a PhD student. Professor Robert Gilmore Pontius of Clark University in Worcester, US, will give the Schermerhorn lecture. Hundreds of newly arrived foreign students, the majority coming from developing countries, will wear traditional dress of their representative countries.

Pinhani

Part of a much bigger event, the rock band Pinhani will perform at a concert taking place on Atak’s pop podium, Saturday 1 October, Enschede. Begin with Turkish snacks and drinks, followed by a jingle of belly dancing and a percussion workshop. The Turkish Student Association ( TUSAT ) opens its cultural night at 6pm and keeps things moving with an after party, ending at 3am.

Cocktail Party

What started once as a small try-out party is now massive: the Vestingbar's Cocktailparty XL. On Tuesday 27 September 2011, the next one is to be held from 9pm onwards, at both the Bastille's Vestingbar and at the Bastille’s Atrium. A wide range of new cocktails, as well as the best ones from previous parties, will be served non-stop. There will also be special effects and various surprises. Doggy Bag

The 'doggy bag', already a much used item in countries like the US and South Africa, may be introduced in Dutch restaurants as well. In a recent poll, 68% of restaurant visitors, who were interviewed, indicated they would make use of a doggy bag, a container or bag to store leftover food in, if they were offered one. This was indicated by a poll undertaken by the Environment Central Foundation’s research bureau CREM and on posted on the restaurant website Iens.

Art + Technology

Composer and theatre maker Dick Raaijmakers recently won the Art+Technology Award 2011. Sponsored by Witteveen+Bos, the annual award celebrates Raaijmaker’s pioneering spirit in music, visual arts, theatre and poetry. A multimedia artist before his time, Raaijmakers released the world’s first popular electronic music in 1957 and since then has created many electronic compositions, phonokinetic objects, ‘graphical methods’ for tractors and bicycles, and works of visual art for musical theatre. Raaijmakers’ winning exhibition is in the Bergkerk Church, Deventer from 10 November to 4 December.
